Properties and Reactivity
LT-540 is an organosilane with a bifunctional combination of reactive amine groups and hydrolysable inorganic methoxysilyl groups. This bifunctional structure gives LT-540 special properties: it is able to organically bond inorganic materials (e.g., glass, metals, fillers) to organic polymers (e.g., thermoplastics, thermosets, or elastomers), thus acting as an adhesion promoter, a cross-linking agent, and/or a surface modifier.
It is a colourless liquid with a special ammonia odour, soluble in alcohols, chain hydrocarbons and aromatic hydrocarbons and other solvents.
In the presence of water, the methoxy groups of LT-540 hydrolyze form reactive silanol groups which can bond to a variety of inorganic substrates. The organophilic amino group of LT-540 can react with a suitable polymer.
The hydrolysis takes place autocatalytically and the pH of the Hydrolysate is about 11. Examples of suitable inorganic substrates are glass, glass fibers, glass wool, mineral wool,silicic,acid,,sand,cristobalite,wollastonite, mica and aluminum hydroxid, kaolin, talc, other silicate fillers, metal oxides and metals.
LT-540 may be used with such polymers as epoxy, phenolic, furan and melamine resins, polyurethanes, PA, PBT, PC, EVA, modified PP, PVB, PVAC, PVC, acrylics and silicones.
LT-540 can undergo reactions with ketone or ester solvents. Silane or silanized substrates can react with carbon dioxide to form the corresponding carbonates and/or carbamates, respectively.Product modifications are possible through addition reactions with suitable monomeric or polymeric compounds (e.g. isocyanates, epoxides).

Application
LT-540 is an important additive in many application. Such as:
◆ Glass fiber/glass fabric composites: as a finish or a size ingredient.
◆ Glass and metal primers.
◆ Foundry resins: as an additive to cold-curing phenolic and furan resins.
◆ Sealants and adhesives: as a primer or additive and for chemical modification.
◆ Mineral-filled composites: for pretreatment of fillers and pigments.
◆ Paints and coatings: as an additive and primer for improving adhesion to the substrate.
Important functional effects that can be achieved through the use of LT-540 include:
◆ Improved mechanical properties, such as flexural strength, tensile strength, impact strength and modulus of elasticity.
◆ Improved moisture and corrosion resistance.
◆ Improved electrical properties, such as dielectric constant, volume resistivity.
LT-540 can also improve such processing properties as:
◆ Adhesion
◆ Filler dispersion
◆ Rheological behavior in viscosity, Newtonian behavior.
◆ Increased filler loading.
